A Secret Painting, Discovered!

Woman Ironing (La repasseuse, 1904) by Pablo Picasso, is much more than what meets the eye at first impressions. A study of Woman Ironing completed in 1989, unveiled a portrait of a man beneath the surface of the painting.Limited technology prevented further investigation of the underlying portrait until recently.

The Guggenheim Conservation Department has been conducting studies of the portrait using imaging technologies and chemical analysis of the painting. You can get a peek of what the original painting looked like before Picasso decided to paint over it.
